We designed this fixture to cut down on setup time and re-fixturing needs on a wide variety of parts. We run low volumes and a wide variety of stock sizes, so we wanted to make this fixture as easy (or easier) to use as changing chuck jaws.

With chuck pressure set very low, the end faces of the slides contact tabs on the riser to lightly locate and hold it firmly in place, while the standard 6 bolts of the jaws are used to clamp the riser to the face of the chuck. Essentially it is installed just like normal jaws, except without having to measure or count serrations as it is just one solid piece of steel. Standard T-slot nuts help locate the assembly as it is torqued to spec, just like with standard jaws.

On our in-house unit, we machine and engrave reference flats for C0, and flats for probing other positional measurements of the riser platform. We also faced our unit to 200mm exactly (+/-0.0001") and engraved our z-offset value, such that we can easily reference this face for CAM programs and just use it as the work offset without having to measure or touch off the part every time. It is best to face and engrave these features on your own machine for precise calibration.

Repeatability is good, we have seen ~0.001" in runout or x/y position at the platform, and 0.0001" variation in Z. We primarily use this as a convenient means of fixturing raw stock with a live center in the sub-spindle, allowing full 360 degree access to the part and space away from the machine walls for B-axis movement. The double ended support is great for rigidity in heavy roughing, and we've run many complex part geometries in one setup just by tabbing out the final part.

This riser was designed for our kitagawa B208 8" chuck, and Shunk KSC3 125 Vise, on our Mazak Integrex i-250HS. We can easily accommodate other vise brands and mounting patterns, just ask. We are also happy to quote a version of our riser for 10" or 12" chucks on request.
